One-on-One Bible Studies

We have two one-on-one Bible studies that we ask every New Life member to go through as part of his growth in Christ. They are “Beginning the Journey” and “The Arrival Kit”. Many of you are doing a wonderful job in using and learning with these materials and I just want to clarify a few things about these particular studies. Every member of New Life is highly encouraged to go through them sooner or later since it is part of our required courses. We don’t go through them with unbelievers because they are written for believers who are part of house church ...

We Shouldn’t Complain

On Thursdays, my day off, I usually relax by watching a DVD. I prefer movies that make me think about life over comedies or action movies. When I watch these movies, I cannot help but feel that we take many blessings for granted. Sometimes I watch movies with characters who struggle to overcome their addictions to alcohol or drugs. Their main goal in life is to conquer their addictions. I am reminded that most of us don't suffer from addictions, but we don't feel blessed. Sometimes I watch court dramas where the protagonists are falsely accused - betrayed by false ...

The Valley of Vision

Last few weeks, I have been experiencing God’s closeness and His voice speaking gently to my soul. I felt depressed, lonely, lost, and sad because of the hardships my dad was facing. I see my dad in his old age having nothing. He once had a single home, but my oldest brother sold it to get a bigger house to live together. However, due to an unfortunate business investment, my oldest brother lost everything. My dad had to move from an apartment to an apartment because he has no place of his own. He doesn’t have 401K plan or any bank accounts. In the eyes of the ...

Serve New Christians, Challenge Old Christians

House Church ministry is based on service. Jesus said that he came not to be served but to serve. He also said that whoever wants to be first must be a servant of all. Churches became weak when the leaders they select are willing to manage but not to serve. One mission of the House Church is to restore servant leadership. Authority comes from sacrificial service. A diminutive mother can make her huge football-playing son obey her because she has authority that comes from many years of sacrificial caretaking. In our church, some Shepherds are younger, less educated, and ...

We Are Brothers And Sisters

As I wrote on our church website, I'm still excited about what happened in Japan at the first House Church Seminar For Japanese-Speaking Pastors. I think that the seminar will be remembered as a watershed event in Japanese Christian history. Japan has the highest missionary-to-population ratio in the world, but shows the least fruit. It's unbelievable to me that the percentage of Christians is around 1% (and only half of them Evangelical) in a country where religious freedom is guaranteed. The average number of members in a Japanese church is only 32. Pastor Nam-Soo Cho, ...

In Anticipation of Joyful Celebration on 12/28

In just two months from today, we will celebrate the completion of “To Gain More.” For those of you who have become members of New Life within the past three years, “To Gain More” is our building project that we kicked off exactly three years ago while we were worshipping in the Korean Speaking Congregation’s (KSC) gymnasium. Before the gym, we first worshipped in their old youth chapel, and then we moved into their old trailer house which, since then, has been remodeled and is being used as a children’s game room. It was while we were borrowing the gym ...

Love Your Enemies

Luke 6:27-36 One of the most distinguishing characters of our Lord is His uncompromising love for His enemies. He refused to hate, exclude, defame, or ruin His own enemies. I believe Jesus came to redefine the meaning of love for His followers. In our modern days, however, we the followers of Christ believe in the concept of loving our enemies but have difficulty living it out. At the Renovare Conference last week, Dallas Willard said, “You don’t have to go too far to find your enemies, because they are in your Church.” I shared this with someone in New Life, ...
