American Idol: Not Just a Show

The runaway hit TV show, “American Idol” began its new season this past week. I wouldn’t say that I’m a big fan of the show by any stretch, but it certainly provides good entertainment. I watched the season premiere and was amusingly shocked by some of the contestants who were convinced of their singing ability. One contestant that particularly stood out, at least to me, was a young lady who had the peculiar ability to sing like the lion character from the movie, “Wizard of Oz.” Hilarious and pitiful at the same time. As I was watching, I could not help but wonder why so many of these contestants went through so much trouble to make ...

Looking Back

It’s December already! And it actually feels like it in Houston this year – nice and cold. It’s during this time of year that I really begin to think over the past year and see how God has moved…and what a year it was! Some highlights from 2006: Moving out of our apartment…moving in with my in-laws…moving out of their place…and finally moving into our first house… Selling both of our junky cars...on the same day…and buying our first new car together… Leaving my job as Dr. Jung’s office manager…and beginning full-time ministry here at SBC… Welcoming our first niece into the world…and finding out that another baby is ...

Wii Just Need to Ask!

This past Thanksgiving week, other than eating a lot, our family (the guys mostly) spent much of our time playing the new Nintendo Wii video game system, which my brother-in-law John just bought. This system was just released and was pretty much sold out everywhere so the way my brother-in-law got his was pretty surprising… He and my sister were shopping at a Sam’s Club the day the Wii came out, when right before leaving, my sister noticed a sign saying that they had 3 Wii systems available for sale. Assuming they were already sold out, John dismissed the idea of getting one, but my sister insisted that he ask anyways. So he approached an ...

Integrity for Sale: $1

I read an article recently on the subject of employees regularly pilfering (stealing in small amounts) office supplies for personal use. About 25% of working adults ages 18 to 29 have admitted to doing it. On top of that, most of those who openly admit to doing it say they feel fine about it, as if these “free” office supplies are some kind of unofficial benefit of working at a company. And it doesn’t come without consequences: the estimated cost to U.S. businesses for the disappearance of office supplies is about $52 billion per year! Many of us may not be guilty of doing this (since most of us don’t work at a company yet), but we ...

Over the hEdge

Have you seen the movie, “Over the Hedge”? In it, we get an interesting look at humanity from the perspective of a small family of animals that has recently lost its natural habitat to a new subdivision. The animals, who lived on the little they could find, were amazed at not only how much food humans ate, but also how much food was wasted. Indeed, we eat way, way, way too much – and still, we find ways of wasting tons of food. You see, most of us don’t even know when we’re full – we simply eat until the food in front of us is gone. This is why Chinese buffet restaurants do so well in America! But as much as we eat, we also waste ...

Pull My Finger

Gina and I had a good, hearty laugh the other night. While I was brushing my teeth, I remembered that I had to get something from the laundry room so I went over there, where Gina was pulling clothes out of the dryer. Because I had my toothbrush in my mouth, I couldn’t say anything so I simply pointed to what I needed. When Gina saw me pointing, she instinctively pulled my finger, which caught me off guard. You see, I wanted her to simply hand me the mop but she thought I wanted her to pull my finger. You have to understand that whenever I made this gesture before, I was hoping that she would pull my finger – you know, to “get the prize....

Unashamed

This past Wednesday, September 27 was national “See You at The Pole” day. Millions of students were gathered around their schools’ flagpoles to pray for their schools and their leaders. I had the privilege of joining some of you at Cy Ridge High School this past Wednesday morning. (I had no idea there was such a thing as “zero period” which starts at 6:30AM. Nuts.) Anyways, I was really encouraged to see such a good turnout of students at the flagpole, singing praise songs and praying for their school and our nation’s leaders. It is so important that we take the time to pray for our schools and those who have been elected to lead ...
