Sorrowful, Yet Always Rejoicing

2 Corinthians 6:10a Recently, the Lord spoke to me clearly and rekindled my heart for the nations. For more than 7 years, I felt led to write a book but couldn’t really get a clear vision for the book, until I came to Thailand. God took hold of my heart with 2 Corinthians 6:3-10, especially verse 10. I could not move on to other passages, because God would not allow me to stop thinking about the verse. In submission to the Holy Spirit, I meditated on the verse and started to look deeper. I asked myself, how can Paul be sorrowful and yet always rejoice? Can joy be a ...

Coping With Forgetfulness

When I first came to Seoul Baptist, people were impressed because I called them by their names, even though I had only met them briefly when I was invited as a revival speaker. I was able to remember their names because I made a conscientious effort. When I decided to accept their invitation to become the senior pastor of Seoul Baptist, I asked the church to mail me their monthly newsletter and memorized the names that appeared on it. God knows our names. He loves and values each of us individually. Likewise, I want to know each of our church members and remember their ...

My Three Ministry Dreams

I had three dreams for my ministry. The first was to restore the New Testament church. The second was the peaceful coexistence of the Korean-speaking and English-speaking congregations. The third was to have an honorable retirement. I feel that the first dream has been fulfilled as our church successfully converted to the House Church. The second dream has also been fulfilled with the English-speaking congregation becoming a healthy, vibrant part of Seoul Baptist Church. But my third dream has yet to be fulfilled. I have this dream because I saw many churches fail to ...

A Beautiful Retreat

We had a beautiful Fall Retreat last weekend. It is one of those events that we will store in our memory treasure chest so we can bring it back out when our faith journey gets weary to remind ourselves of God’s goodness and be strengthened by it. As time passes by, however, our memory gets dim. Therefore, I would like to point out some of the things that were especially beautiful so we could savor and cherish God’s work that was done in our midst during the retreat a little longer. The facility was beautiful. It was less than 50 miles away from church and even ...

Happiness of Being in a Rut

When I have too much to do, I feel stressed. When I have less than that to do, I get bored. There’s no in-between; I’m always either stressed or bored. I’m conservative and feel more comfortable with what I am accustomed to, but I can't stand doing the same things the same way. When I go somewhere, I try new routes if I believe that it might save me even a minute. It usually ends up taking more time and makes me late for my appointments. Because of my idiosyncrasies, daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly routines tend to make me bored. My sense of boredom has increased ...

Travel Ends, Treatment Begins

I just came back from a month-long trip to Korea. I spoke at a House Church Conference for Pastors, led two seminars, one for pastors and one for lay people, and also led 2 revival meetings. This conference broke the attendance record as 480 people registered for it, and many more would have attended if hotel rooms were available. I’m not sure whether the high interest is only temporary, but we decided to hold two conferences simultaneously next year to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. My wife led the Married Life class for the last time at this conference. ...
