Moment of Remembrance

“When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight” (Joshua 4:1-3). At the foot of the Jordan River, Joshua declared the Word of the Lord, their God. Joshua pointed out that God would drive out the seven pagan tribes so that the people would know that the Living God was among the ...

Moment of Renewal

Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you” (Joshua 3:5). Joshua and the Israelites knew too well that paving their own path would end up in tragedy. Standing before the Jordan River, without a doubt, they wholeheartedly believed that following the path that God Himself was leading would bring utmost joy to their lives. A day before crossing the Jordan River, Joshua commanded the people to consecrate, meaning to purify themselves. Strangely, Joshua did not command the people to sharpen their weapons for ...

Pastor That Knows His Church Members Well

We have many members who attend our church only for a period time like 1-2 years. Therefore, we have sometimes 2 to 3 members that leave here back to Korea or to other states in a week. Some among them come to receive prayers before they leave during the worship service so their names are posted on the church bulletin. But in most case, they leave without letting me know. When I only come to know that someone has left us through ministry diary of the Shepard, I become somewhat disappointed in my heart. Even if they may have been with us short time, how can they not even ...

Two Gone, Only One Left

I have three sons. They are all very dear and precious to me. The first son, Enoch, is a junior at A&M in College Station. The second son, Caleb, just went to UT Austin as a freshman. And the third one, Josiah, is a junior at Taylor High School in Katy. In two more years, he, too, will move away for college. My wife and I went up to Austin with Caleb a few weekends ago to help him settle in his dorm. We also wanted to visit a church or two with him to see which church family might be a good one for him to join so he can learn and serve to grow spiritually during ...

Salvation Purchased by Sacrifice

As my faith deepens, I am more and more grateful for my salvation. At the same time, I cannot help think how many people God sacrificed to save me. Because I understand that salvation is always wrought through sacrifice, I know that my salvation must have been purchased by somebody’s sacrifice. Of course, the greatest sacrifice was made by Jesus. His sacrifice purchased our salvation. However, I often feel that a person’s salvation is based on sacrifice made by others. This happened a while ago. A couple came to the States for medical training. The husband was an ...

A church that is thoughtful toward VIPs

A while back before I was a senior pastor, I met with the ministry team leaders one at a time at our church. I anticipated becoming quite busy once I became a senior pastor so I thought it would be a good idea to meet up with them while I had time so I could hear about what they had in mind and of the work they were doing. I met with the deacons and team leaders in charge and asked them to brief me on their work like people do at work when a new leader takes over the position. We mostly met at a restaurant and all of them were well prepared in their presentation, I was ...

Gracious words can bring healing

Do you know there are words that are like medicine to our souls? Listen to what King Solomon said, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Prov. 16: 24). Here, gracious words are described as honeycomb because they are sweet to our souls. King Saul’s son Jonathan, when he was weary from the battle, ate some honey and his eyes became brightened, meaning the renewal of strength was gained (1 Samuel 14:27). Proverbs also uses the image of honey as wisdom, “Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to ...
