Children Are not Our Possessions

I went to Austin the other day to help my daughter move out (she is graduating soon). It was possible because I can now prepare Sunday sermons with considerable ease(before I couldn’t have thought it possible at all to go somewhere on Thursday and come back on Friday when I had to preach on Sunday). I don’t like to drive long distance, but I was driving to Austin to help my child when I have so many things to do myself. I thought that it was so true that parental love is one-way: downward toward their children. Parents are very sensitive to their children’s needs, ...

Lending Money Among Church Members

I hear that even now there are persons in our church asking to borrow money from other members. I know that this is a church principle that everyone should know, but I want to repeat once more. I request that we should stop borrowing or loaning money between House Church family members or among church members. This is because when there is a problem paying back the loan in time, the relationship between members will be broken. Even if you had a great relationship before, but if one side was to borrow money and do not pay back in time, there will be problems that will ...

Feel and Experience Rather Than Analyze

People have two opposite tendencies to approach the outside world. First, the intellectual approach is to analyze and systematize the available information with language. The other is the emotional and intuitive approach, which feels and imagines information, rather than observes and analyzes it. We must have two tendencies in harmony in our lives. In other words, we definitely need to endeavor to objectively think and analyze things. Having said that, sometimes we need to accept things in a more simple and intuitive way. The reason is that two approaches do not necessa...

Renovation of the Cafeteria and Our Office Area

We all have felt that our cafeteria is getting too small for us. We all come earlier on Sundays to find enough space for our house church members to sit together after Sunday services. Right now, it is much better because lots of us are visiting Korea during vacation. But I heard that some unpleasant remarks are exchanged over the tables when more then 600 members attend the first service. It is also regrettable toask people to leave early so that others coming for the second service can have enough parking spaces. To solve this problem, we plan to renovate our cafeter...

Pastor Young-Gi Chai Is Coming Back

It has been almost 2 years since Pastor Young-Gi Chai has retired and left for Korea. He originally indicated that he will be away for about a year for the church to be settled down, but he ended up staying in Korea for much longer as there was a lot of work to be done for House Church Ministries in Korea. His presence in Korea may be necessary from time to time in the future due to the fact that he is still the president of House Church Ministries. But he has decided to publicly attend Seoul Church of Houston starting July of this year. Pastor Chai thought that it ...

The Correlation between Commitment and Change

After sermon, we have commitment times when people walk up to the commitment table. There are six categories for commitment. If a person wants to register to our church, to accept Jesus as his or her personal Savior, to receive baptism, or to apply for the membership, he or she walks to the commitment table and marks the corresponding category. In addition to these one-time commitment occasions, anybody can come to the front when he or she makes a new decision after hearing the sermon or participating in the service and wants to recommit himself or herself to Jesus. Other ...

What a Surprise!

I am uncomfortable being the center of attention. That's why I have always preferred working behind the scenes, being a good follower to a good leader. I have never liked surprise parties being thrown for me. I remember getting upset at my wife for giving me a surprise birthday party in the earlier years of our marriage. I am an introvert by nature. However, last Friday, many of you came out to church and gave me a (not- so) surprise birthday party. It truly touched my heart. Even though I felt awkward getting roasted big time, I deeply appreciated all of you and ...
