My Two Small Eyes

I never thought that my eyes were small for being an Asian man. In fact, I was convinced that they were average or a little above average. However, throughout this year, especially as I was getting my eyes treated by my cataract surgeon, I have come to accept that my eyes are indeed small. When I go to his office and sit in front of his apparatus, he tells me to open my eyes. So I do my best to open them as much as I can. But then, he often uses his fingers to open my eyelids even more so he can see inside my eye! I never laughed out loud in his office but I can't help but to laugh whenever I think about this.  I must have small eyes ...

He Did It Again!

We had a marvelous time serving the community this past Thursday through our annual Fall Festival. We all know the story in regards to what happened to the weather. Weather men and women forecasted even as late as on Wednesday evening that there will be 100% chance of rain on Thursday at 4PM which is the time that we needed the weather to be clear for us to set up and prepare. However, we all prayed asking God to take away the rain and clouds just several hours quicker so we can serve the community. The thought that went through my mind as I was praying for the weather was, "God is the one who created the universe by the words of His mouth. So, ...

Learning to Thank God in All Circumstances

On February 11, my wife, Lynette, Caleb, my second son, and Dustin, his friend, on their way to church for their Bible studies, got into a major car accident on Hammerly and Beltway 8. Our car got totaled but other than Lynette getting a fractured rib, everyone was safe. I thank God for His protection over their lives. On February 19, I was rushed to the hospital because my right eye retina was detached. The surgery went well. More surgeries, such as vitrectomy and cataract surgery, will be done in that eye in the coming months. However, I am thankful because there is a strong possibility that my vision will be restored at least to some degree...

What Have We Done to Deserve This?

Have you ever experienced a deep despair because your loved ones are so far behind in life that they can't seem to catch up? About six years ago, before my mother passed away, I was made aware that my second sister was struggling with a huge credit card debt that she just couldn't get out of on her own. One of my mother's last words to me was to help my sister who was in a dire situation. Therefore, out of love and respect for my dying mother and care and concern for my sister, I committed myself to help her get out of the big mess that she got herself in. I got her enrolled in a debt settlement program and, because her English is not good, I ...

Two Gone, Only One Left

I have three sons. They are all very dear and precious to me. The first son, Enoch, is a junior at A&M in College Station. The second son, Caleb, just went to UT Austin as a freshman. And the third one, Josiah, is a junior at Taylor High School in Katy. In two more years, he, too, will move away for college. My wife and I went up to Austin with Caleb a few weekends ago to help him settle in his dorm. We also wanted to visit a church or two with him to see which church family might be a good one for him to join so he can learn and serve to grow spiritually during the four years he will be living in Austin. I knew that this day was going to ...

Did Pastor Eric let you take a vacation?

Every Wednesday evening shepherds come together to share, encourage, learn and pray for one another. During this time, shepherds take turns to pray publicly and share a testimonial message. Through this they are getting trained to pray publicly and to share God's word using their own personal life stories. And I always get tremendously blessed by hearing their prayers and messages. A few weeks ago, a shepherd shared his testimonial message titled, "Why I like New Life." He started out his message by sharing with us a recent conversation he had with his daughter, who is about five or six years old, on their way to San Antonio for a family ...

Youth group house church: What more can you ask for?

I came home from work at about 5PM today knowing that Josiah's house church will be meeting at our place and Lynette will be gone teaching pre-marital class elsewhere. Youth house church usually meets at 6:30PM but at about 5:30PM, three students arrived already. I welcomed them and asked them why they came so early. They said they came straight from church after praise team practice. I went inside my bedroom to lie down to rest my eyes for a little while. Then, I started to hear loud noises coming from the living room. They were playing cards. I started to get annoyed. I got up at about 6:20PM to tell them to stop playing cards and get ready ...
