From the Pastor’s Desk (244)
The 15th House Church Seminar for Pastors is coming to an end with today’s Sunday corporate worship service. And I am experiencing various different kinds of emotions. First of all, I feel a sense of relief because I don’t need to speak anymore. I am an introvert and I don’t enjoy speaking in front of people. Now, it’s finally over! J
I also feel very small and inadequate. What we are praying for and hoping to do by offering these seminars is to help local church pastors and lay leaders understand the kind of prevailing church that Jesus had in his mind when he said he will build his church. And we want to ...

We take the
Bible very seriously at New Life. If the Bible says it is, then it is. If the
Bible says do it, then we do our best to do it. This is the spirit of the New
Testament church.
Since we
teach what tithing is through Class 201 and Living Life Bible Study, I will not
go in detail to deal with it. But just briefly, all throughout the Bible,
tithing is used to do mainly three things. One, to express our gratitude to
God. Two, to demonstrate our faith in God. And three, to protect us from
worshipping and idolizing money. Therefore, tithing does all these three for
me. As I write the check on every Thursday, which is 15% of my income, and
bring ...

I don’t have three year, five year or ten year
plan. I never had and I don’t think I ever will. It’s because I am not a
visionary and the future is in God’s hands. As I look back the past 21 plus
years of New Life’s ministry and history, I think I have tried to be faithful
in doing what I am called to do one day, one week, one month and at most one
year at a time.
Just recently, however, I have sensed God impressing
upon my heart with this thought, “Eric, I want you to challenge your house
church shepherds and members to go all out in reaching out to VIPs so that in
three years all your house churches will be able to multiply!” And ...

I would
like to remind you of the policy we have in regards to Christians trying or
wanting to come to New Life. If they are from Houston, we are very strict with
them. Unless they have a very legitimate reason such as their church dissolving
or their pastor contacting and asking me to take them for a very convincing
reason, we don’t welcome or receive them. We do this because we don’t want
Christians to hop around from church to church never learning the importance of
humbling themselves and working out the interpersonal conflicts they may have
with other church members. We also want to teach Christians to stay put in one
church to build up the ...

We insert communication cards in our Sunday bulletin every week for the purpose of communication! J When New Life members and attendees drop their cards in the offering baskets, they are brought to me so that I can follow up on them.
Mainly three things are communicated through the card. First one is urgent prayer needs. In addition to using yearly prayer request forms, I use prayer needs that are written in the communication cards to pray for the members each week. Second one is classes or ministries. New Life members can indicate what classes or ministries they are interested in taking or serving in through the card. And third one is message to ...

Everyone wants to live his life for something that is deeply meaningful and significant. He wants his life to matter and count.
Church is not any different. A church that senses that she is fulfilling God’s purpose for her will feel extremely satisfied and fulfilled. On the other hand, a church that feels lost and stuck will be miserable.
The purpose of church’s existence is to save the lost and make them Christ’s disciples. It’s clearly spelled out in Matthew 28:18-20 which is known as The Great Commission.
Every church, if she is a Bible believing church, knows this. However, not every church knows how to go about fulfilling this Great ...

We didn’t have Fall Festival both in 2017 and 2018. Last year was the first time in history of New Life we cancelled it due to rain and this year was the second time due to the same reason. It happened two years in a row back to back.
Why did it rain on both days? I don’t know. You don’t know. Only God knows. But I want us to approach Fall Festival with a renewed mindset going forward.
Fall Festival, along with Crawfish Boil and Late (Game) Night with (at) New Life, is one of the few events that we do as a whole church to reach out to our VIPs. Unlike the other two events, however, Fall Festival is special in that through the event we ...
