This week is Passion week. I want to summarize this week so that you can meditate on the suffering of Jesus and be ready for Good Friday service. For this week, it would be good to keep this pastor’s corner in the Bible and read the daily portion and meditate on it. I used bible verses from Matthew but it will be beneficial to read other books of the Bible also.
Sunday (Matthew 21:1-11) The last week of Jesus started on this day as he entered Jerusalem on Sunday. As it was written by the prophets, Jesus was on a donkey and a large crowd spread their cloaks on the road and waved Palm tree leaves and shouted, ‘Hosanna’. They were excited that the long waited messiah finally came and the disciples who followed Jesus for 3 years must have been full of expectations of their dreams coming true. However, Jesus alone must have been thinking about the sufferings to come.
Monday (Matthew 21:12-17) Jesus spent the night at Bethany and was on his way to Jerusalem in the morning. He was hungry and saw and went to a fig tree. Finding the tree had no fruit, he cursed the tree. It seems that he was feeling the pain of Jerusalem which did not bear spiritual fruit. The pain intensified as he arrived at the temple. Love for God was gone and only the format of worship remained in the temple. When Jesus saw this, he drove out all who were buying and selling there and overturned the tables of the money changers. We need to reevaluate our lives to see whether love for God has turned into a religious activity.
Tuesday (Matthew 21:18-26-13) This is the longest portion of teaching. Pharisees and Seduces could not defeat Jesus in arguments. In the evening, Jesus went up mount Olive. As he looked at Jerusalem, he was overcome by grief and wept.
Wednesday (Matthew 26:14-16) Judas went to the chief priests and agreed to hand Jesus over for thirty pieces of silver.
Thursday (Matthew 26:17-46) Disciples prepared the Passover meal and all of them were together. After washing his disciples’ feet and having the Passover supper, Jesus taught many things as it was recorded in John. (John 13:1-17:26) It would be good to read this part with imagine the mind of Jesus. After supper, it was late at night. Jesus and his disciples went to Gethsemane. Jesus asked them to pray with him but they could not overcome sleep.
Friday (Matthew 26:47-27:61) Jesus was arrested by a crowd who came with Judas. It was early morning and he was taken to many places. He was sent to Sanhedrin, stood before Pilate, then to Herod, returned back to Pilate, sentenced to death and crucified. It would be around 10 in the morning. From noon to 3 pm, there was darkness and Jesus suffered the agony of Hell. That day around 4 pm, Jesus passed away. His body was taken down from the cross before sunset and placed in the grave.
This week, please walk with Jesus as it was suggested above, and then come to the worship service for Good Friday for more meaningful worship.
