Through the help of a great friend and brother in Christ, I came to realize something that I have missed for a long time. I realized that there is a BIG difference between knowing God as my Heavenly Father and feeling, really feeling, that God was truly my Father in every way. The realization that I was missing that in my relationship with God hit me like a ton of bricks. I haven’t wept like that in years.
If we are lucky enough, we will catch a glimpse of what that feels like through our earthly fathers. Many of us, however, miss out on that tender Fatherly love and so it becomes very difficult for us to know what it feels like, deep in our hearts, to see God as our Father. The Bible tells us in Galatians 4 that because of what Christ has done for us, we are no longer slaves but sons in God’s eyes. And He wants us to see Him that way, free to love Him and be loved by Him, free to trust Him and surrender our lives to Him, free to cry out to Him, “Abba! Father!” God wants us to know, every minute of our lives, that He loves us and that His love is all we will ever need.
If we do not see God as our Father in every way, we will naturally see Him in other ways. Perhaps we will think of Him only as our boss, our supervisor, our discipliner, or our judge. While God may be all of these things, He is first our Father who loves us and because of that, we do not need to try and impress Him. Fathers who truly love their children simply love their children. They do not need anything from them, nor do they turn their backs when their children disappoint them. God our Father is not sitting on His throne, arms folded, shaking His head at us. Beloved, He is right next to us, arms open, and gazing at us with His abundant love.
